Thrissur District

Thrissur is known as the Cultural Capital of Kerala. Build around a hillock a top of which is situated Vadakkumnatha Temple, the festival of this temple is famous as Thrissur Pooram best known ‘Poorangalude pooram’ – The Mother of all Temple Festivals. There amongst a number of Major Temple festivals in this District, Uthralikkavu, Arattupuzha are few amongst them. The main attraction of these Festivals are Elephants.

Thrissur’s development and growth as an important town attributed  to Raja Rama Varma also known as ‘Sakthan Thampuran’ Strong King. The Thrissur is an important commercial center mainly for Gold and Clothings.

  • Nehru Park and Aquarium
    At the Nehru Park in the city has an aquarium. This is one of the tourist attractions
  • Art Museum
    At the Zoo compound of Thrissur, there is a small Art Museum. It consist of a good Collections of Ancient Jewelry, amazing collection of Kerala Lamps, Wood Carvings and Kathakali Sculptures.
  • State Archaeological Museum
    The state Archaeological museum is situated away from town at Chembukkavu. It open 10 – 5 PM and closed on Mondays.

    Houses of Picture gallery where mural paintings from all parts of Kerala are on Display
  • Thrissur Pooram
    The Thrissur Vadakkumnatha Temple is the Venue of ‘Thrissur Pooram’ known as ‘Pooram’ of all ‘Poorams’ means the greatest temple festival amongst all temple festivals . This is celebrated annually on the moth of April. The fireworks and the gathering of a number of Elephants and ‘Kudamattom’ are the main attractions.
  • The Vadakkunnathan Temple
    This is one of the Oldest temple of the state., the Vadakkunnathan temple is the classical example of the Kerala style of architecture and has a many decorative murals and pieces of Art.
  • Zoo
    The Zoo situated about 2 KM from City and comprised 14 acres. Here live a variety of fauna – Lion tailed macaque, sloth bear, different species of birds and deer. A snake park is also there. It has a collection of King Cobras, Kraits, Vipers and Rattlesnakes.
  • Chavakkad
    The Chavakkad is famous for the Church believed to be established by St.Thomas in 52 AD. Manathala Jama Ath Mosque where the remains of Hydrosekutty Mopper who died for the fighting the invasion of Tipu Sultan.
  • Chalakudy
    Chalakudy is one of the major Town of Middle Kerala. It is at the foothill of the multipurpose Hydro-Electric and irrigation projects of Sholayar project ranges. The beautiful waterfalls of Athirapally and Vazhachal 5KM apart are in the area.
  • Cheruthuruthy
    Cheruthuruthy is a beautiful village at the shores of ‘Bharathapuzha’ river. This is one of natural Kerala Village having natural beauty. The seat of Kerala Kala Mandalam is here.
  • Guruvayoor
    Guruvayoor is one of the most important pilgrimage center for Hindus in South India. This is 32 KM from Town. The Sri Krishna Temple is around 5000 years old, is dedicated to lord Krishna. Palayur Church, one of the seven churches established by St.Thomas, is at Guruvayoor .
  • Irinjalakkuda – Koodal Manikyam Temple
    The Koodal Manikyam Temple of Irinjalakkuda is an old temple situated 21 KM from Town. The temple is dedicated to Bharat, the brother of Rama, is one and only temple of its kind in India.
  • Kunnamkulam
    It is situated 22 KM from Thrissur, is an ancient Christian center. Is is believed that Kunnamkulam is a settlement pf Christians, specially invited by the Maharaja of Cochin for Trade and Commerce.

    This Wild life sanctuary is situated 23 KM from town. It comprised around 125 Sq KM of area, Elephants are the main attraction here.
  • Punnathur Kotta
    This is the place one can see a number of Temple Elephants around 50 taken care off. The Punnathur Kotta is belongs to Guruvayoor Temple.
  • Triprayar
    The Thriprayar is famous for its Rama Temple. It is 25 KM from Town. It have the similar architecture of Thrissur Vadakkumnatha Temple.
  • VadakancheryThis is small Commercial town located 20 KM from Town. The ‘Uthralikkavu’ Temple festival is famous for its participation of Elephants and Fire Works.
  • Chimmini Wildlife Sanctuary
    It is 35 KM from Town, main attractions Flora: Evergreen and semi-evergreen forests, Leaf shedding Forests. Fauna : Leopards, Elephants, Bears, Wild pigs, Wild bison and Tigers.
